LR question

I just had a guy that knows my friend give me 30LBS of LR that he had in his 55 gallon tank. I'm not sure how long the rock has been out of the water for, but I was wondering if it mattered at all, or should the rock be okay as long as its cured. The guy told me to scrub it with a brush and then let it sit in a pan of boiling water. Does this sound right??? Thank you

if it is dry and "clean" looking then i would just wash it with fresh water give it a little scrubadubdub and put it in the tank

Well at that point it would not be "LR" but just rock. And I believe it would be ok to add to your tank

Letting it boil and scrubbing it will kill whatever is on it. He could be giving you good advice, the rock could be covered in aiptasia. Personally, I would put it in my tank, if nothing else is in there, and see what it does. If you have rock and/or life in there, then put it in a tub and see what happens. As long as it isn't in with other cured rock/life in a tank, you don't have anything to lose.

If it's dried then it is no longer live. Amount of time out of water has a lot of bearing on what to do with it...recure, scrub and wash first or just drop it in.

Do you have a QT tank to put it in to see if mojano or aiptasia emerges?

Ah, he may come back tommorow. Think possitive
He won't want to come back to a hijacked thread.

Can you get us a pic of the rock and specs on how long it has been out and whether it was wrapped in paper or rags?

yeah I'll try and put some pics on tonight. The guy told my friend to have me boil it because he had an algae problem. The rocks look like they have a lot of growth on them too. The guy has been in the hobby along time so I think he knows what hes talking about but I'm not to sure. I'll try and post pictures in a little while though. Thanks everyone!
