Krusty-Hey everybody! Sorry, Simpson's quote for those of you who don't know. Anyway, Krusty-what I did and it works great and is actually very beneficial is this. For two years I had crushed coral in my tank. I broke my tank down and made a little ten gallon mini. After moving everything out and taking the fish I had to the lfs (I wanted to make a little aggressive tank) I started building this tank. I took fiber glass screening, the stuff for sliding screen doors on your house, and cut a piece the size of the bottom of my tank. I vaccumed the cc over a period of three weeks to get very clean. I laid the screen (make sure it's fiberglass if you use my advice.....no metal!!) on top of my c.c. After I put the screen over I went and got the marine sand with the beneficial bacteria they sale in bags. Got a couple of those bags and laid it over top of the screen. It seperates the two and looks really good. After another week I went to my lfs and got 20lbs of live sand. They have stuff right from the bottom of the ocean in fiji. Lots of little critters in there. Got a couple small starfish and crabs in there along with the usual pods. Needless to say, I have never liked the the bottom of my tank more then I do now. IT looks great and its a great setup for some more bio-filtration. Put some live rock in there and you're off!! That's my .02 cents.

ps-another tip, I had no fish in there when I did this so I didn't have to worry about trites, trates and ammonia. If you have fish in there work it a little slower and in smaller amounts. You'll get a bunch of spikes on all levels. Good luck.
