Lunar lights are suppose to mimic the moon light, but are more for us and night time tank viewing. In nature there are plenty of cloudy, rainy days. And the moon is only full a couple days in a month.
I used my lunar lights on my reef tank, but not on the seahorse tank. Seahorses, like kids-IMHO, do much better on a consistent schedule. My horses tend to hitch up for the night about a half hour before the tank lights turn off. I know I sleep better at night with the lights off. I've also noticed that if I turn the tank lights on earlier than usual it startles all the horses, just like we do when someone turns the room light on before you're ready to wake up. So, I leave the lights off and the tank is completely dark at night.
My oldest dwarf seahorse male, Titan, let me know exactly how he felt when I woke him up too early.
Getting on in seahorse years, Titan prefers to sleep on the sand bed, instead of hitching. The first time I saw him doing this I was very worried. It was still very early and the tanks lights were still off. I knelt down and lightly tapped the tank glass right next to Titan. He gave a small twitch, and his head came up for a few seconds and then rested back down on his chest. Even more worried I tapped harder on the glass. This time Titan was startled awake. He turned and faced me eye to eye. He gave a defiant snap of his fins at me and then swam off to a more private area to sleep.
The message: "Good grief Woman!!!! Can't and old man get any sleep around here?!?!"
So, I guess my answer is~leave the tank lights off at night
