M58 Ballast - Why does it take so long?

I have an Advanced M58 Magnetic Ballast over my 55g. I just got a brand new XM 10K Bulb and I was wondering...
Why does it take so long to fire up the bulb? The ballast tries and fails, tries and fails and at some point it works.
Is that normal?
Thanks, John

Well the ballast has been trying to fire up this bulb for the past 45 minutes with no success. Is the ballast dead?

Some more information...
I bought the ballast off a fellow reefer. Based on the image below, the Ballast is at most 3.5 years old, but I am not sure how old.

The Bulb is an XM 10K SE and it is brand new.

It shouldn't take that long. They should ignite within seconds.
You've got something wrong... it's more than likely either a bad lamp or a bad capacitor, or a lamp mismatch. Providing that you bought a 250w lamp, I'd say the lamp is not the issue since it's new, but if you have another one around (or if an LFS can lend you one to try, that would tell you for sure.
The capacitor is the next best guess. You can get replacement capacitors from grainger or an electrical supply house. You need to match the capacitance (15mfd) and get one of equal or greater voltage (400v or more, but pretty much all HID caps are rated for 400v). The cap shouldn't cost more than 10-15 bucks. It may or may not look identical to what you have. Often they come in a metal oval can instead of a white plastic cylinder.

I bought the bulb from Hellolights and I talked to them today. They are sending a replacement bulb. I put the old bulb back into the fixture and it is not lighting up immediately either. So I think that I need to replace the capicacitor. Can you recommend an online place I can get a new capacitor from?
Also, should I consider just getting a new ballast completely? I can get an a CoralVue one for about $100.
Thanks, John

try a search on electronic parts and look for the one scsi gave you. it will be cheaper to try the capacitor over the whole ballast

i would recommend an electronic ballast in my opinion the m58 will run that xm 10k rather yellowish. i would go with either the coralvue or a aro which brand new is only 99 from hellolights.
you will find that an electronic ballast will push that bulb more white.
