mag 9 too much?

It depends on what the flow rating is on your overflow.. just make sure that you don't get a too powerful pump so that you won't have to throttle it back much. Too much water coming from the sump into the main tank might cause the overflow box to fill up too quickly and overflow (onto the floor).. It's best to match up the pump and overflow ratings as close as possible, but remember to take into consideration the head pressure on the return pump going all the way back up to your tank from sump.. so a pump rated at 700gph at 0' head won't do all that great at 4' head.. I think the mag9.5 flow rate is 800GPH at 4'head, and you're overflow is probably around this.. but make sure first!

I ran a 950 on my 58 Gallon Oceanic Reef Ready without a problem but it was going through a chiller before returning to the tank. Prior to adding the chiller I had been running a mag 7 but the 950 probably would have been fine as well.

I run a Mag 9.5 on my 65 gallon tank, with a SCWD, about 3' of vertical head pressure, and a ball valve that's kept wide open, and I estimate I'm getting somewhere around 650-700 GPH. I use an 800 GPH overflow, and have had no problems.
