Mag-drive question

hey ya'll
I have a mag 7 as my return pump.
from what i understand while reading about this pump it can be used external as well with the side effect that it is harder on the pump and it wont last as long.
my question is two part.
how much life does doing this take away from the pump
my point of doing this is to try and cool my tank even more. I have alot of pumps and i know they make heat i just dont really know how much
would making this an external pump reduce the heat in my tank

I think the pump is really putting off very very little heat I have a mag 18 & mag 7 & mag 9 and everytime I have added one the temp remained the same. I have heard that they should last just as long externally as long as you clean them every month or so. Just a note they are the best pumps I think shoot my mag 18 been running for over a year I have never cleaned and still run quiet and strong.I would leave it in the water.

Oceana - Did you end up putting your pump external? I have the same pumps and also am trying to get my heat down. Did it help your heat problem?

My Mag Drive 36 has been mounted externally for about 2 years now...IMO...as long as you make sure that there's no air going into the pump..ie...gravity fed hole is low enough so zero air gets in, you should be fine...also...since the pump in external and it's set on top of a thick sponge...it's alot quieter then the vibration it would creat internally

nope i went internal with. since i have a killer 1/3 chiller now heat is not a concern of mine any longer.

using your mag will reduce in tank heat these pumps are made to be external or internal so it will not effect its use time effectiveness.the drawback is they do seam to be loud of course they can be loud in sump also.make sure when hooking up extrenally all fittings are tight and secure unlike in sump usage one leak can create a major desaster

I have been running a MAG 5 and 7 for over 4 years now outside in my gazeebo in external mode and its never been a problem. I have a MAG 3 and 5 running for years as well on two water features in full sun for the most part and never had a problem....And it gets quite hot here in Alabama. I do not think running it outside is going to have any adverse effects on the longevity overall

Yeah I have to agree with Chip....Don't think running the Mag drives externally will shorten the life of the pump by any means.......That is one of the advantages of the Mag Drives......As far as the cons: some people say they leak??? I don't know never run them externally, but Mag Drives do put heat (some) to the tank water due to that is how they cool themselves.....I would strongly disagree with the comment made by jjlittle as far as them being the best pumps...... :hilarious. Try looking at the Red Dragon pumps. These are the Cadillacs of pumps

ya by far the not the best pumps around. I would say the mags are the best of the cheaper pumps. i run Iawaki now. love these damn things. gotta love a pump that can run quiet. is build like a tank, can push out 600 gallons WITH a head of 30 feet. and does it for a great price.
now my mags will just sit in the corner and collect dust
