magnesium

I started using a supplement from Kent Marine in a healthy reef tank. After 2 dosings, snails began dying. I've been told that magnesium is harmful to all mollusks and I should stop using the supplement. I did and the health of the snails is improving daily. Has anyone else had any problems using supplements containing magnesium?

What suppliment were you using? I Don't belive Kent would put somthing in thier product that is harmful to your tank. Was there a warning? I'm NOT saying I don't belive YOU, Just doubtful about the sorce of the magnesium.......STEVE

I just checked the ingredients of all my stuff, and found Magnesium(5.590mg/oz) in Coral-vite. They have it listed as a mineral. They also say it contains NO detrimental heavy metals.

The supplement is 'Kent Marine Essential Elements'. The listed amount of magnesium is 2.0 mg/oz. The label states for reef and fish only setups. The instructions however do mention use for invertebrates. What else would possibly cause the snails (turbo) to become listless, lie on the bottom upside down, or die? All other life in the tank (corals, fish and other invertebrates) are doing fine.

magnesium is an essential part of sea water with a calcium level of 450 mg/liter magnesium should be at 1292 mg/liter and I have found mag. consentrations as high as 1550 mg/liter in my 55 gal with no signs of ill health from my snails, hermits, or any of my inhabitance in fact reef crystals contain magnesium and regular water changes should keep the mag. levels in check natureef makes a very good magnesium test kit that with a calcium test will also show the total hardness. In my opinion I would'nt be so quick to blame the problem on magnesium unless the levels are in the 2000 to even 3000 mg/liters
