Water moves really fast through that filter. How packed is your Carbon. If the Carbon is packed in more than about 2/3 full it might be slowing down the water enough and overheating the motor. Something is wrong with the filter if that filter increasing your water temp that much.

Gotta agree, you sure it's not something else, maybe lights or not using air conditioning??? Might want to give the MFG a little call if you determine it is infact the filter & you set it up fine.

i thought it could be the carbon too but i took it out and waited a few days and the temp still held at 82 so i called marieneland and they said it is a bad motor. But i had bought the filter at a garage sale so i guess i am out of luck and need to buy a new one. Any suggestions on another filter? How are hob filters for saltwater tanks?

I don't really like the thought of a HOB filter for SW. Though a good bit of people do use them & have good results with them. It also depends on things like, fish, how many fish, LR or not, protien skimmer??? I would look into another canister filter, I like the Fluval & I've heard good about the Rena Filstars & the Ehiem ones.
