I use one of them as a mechanical filter and for water movement.
They have a metal bracket on them for the sake of leveling, positioning on the tank rim, etc. It's not stainless - I think it's chromed. In any case, after a few months the adjustment bracket started rusting because it sits in the water.
Yay - heavy metals in my tank...
Simple solution - get a length of 3/16" shrink tubing from local electronics store. Slide it over the bracket and shrink it down. Trim the excess where it feeds through the filter's bracket holds. Viola (sic) - no more rust.
