making a clear top

I have my nova extreme sitting on its legs above the water, but the fixture said to use only on a fully covered aquarium...(ive seem pics of peoples where the light is over the water, not a cover). so I got myself some plexiglass and trimmed it to the size of the opening to go under the light. It is no longer there because i would have to take the whole thing off each time i want to feed and just couldnt be bothered. so how might i make an opening/closing situation on this lid so it is more user friendly, OR is this even necessary and is the light probably going to be fine without a lid under it? Wouldnt the extra layer of plexiglass interfear with lighting the tank?

As long as you don't have air bubbles popping at the surface or water splashing up to the lights a cover isn't necessary. If you need to keep jumping fish in try some egg crate (light diffuser) instead.
