"Making" Live Rock.

Hello, I own a 65 gallon tank, nothing in it right now. I phoned my lfs the other day, and they charge 8.99$ a pound of live rock (Canadian Dollars). Quite costley! If I were to "make" live rock, what type of rock should I use, and how much live rock should I buy to seed the dead rock. (Looking at about 40 lbs total when all is said and done) Thanks.

95% of the questions on this "New Hobbyist" forum could have the search responce. That is not why there is a New hobbyist forum.
Clueless I wish I could help you, I just had to respond to the previous post. I can't tell you type of rock to use. I can say the more LR you have the sooner the dead rock will be seeded. Its a numbers game, if you have 2:1 ratio of dead rock to LR that will seed faster than a 10:1 ratio.

Walmart is right about most fish stores...the chains I would avoid. Check out local independent stores and get to know the owners. If you talk enough with them and build a relationship they can help and strike deals. If they are making their own LR from their "raceways" they will strike a deal definetly. They want you back for the corals and fish, so hopefully you can get LR (like I did) for $5.00 per pound and it cycled my tank in 8 days.
Do some research here though, they would appreciate that you have some insight and you are less likely to be taken advantage of.

I used portland cement and arragonite 1 to 1 ratio, not too soupy or youll have some flat rocks. Good luck :happyfish

go to a local land scaping that sells rock and look for tuffa or lace rock that will work fine. i have a 210g and a 125g that both have lace and tuffa a lone with live rock i have sound that a 4 to one works great 4lbs lace and 1lbs live. in ohio i can get lace foe .69 cents a pound and tuffa for .29 cents a pound. live rock runs about 5.99 a pound. hope that helps

I made it myself.
Looks the same after coriline grows on it.

Thanks, I have done a diy live rock search, and still can't find much about converting (I'm going to go with lace rock) the dead rock to live rock, Do I do it before, after the tank is cycled?
