They are very shy fish and hide more than they are out. It does good in a reef tank but will eat small crustceans and smaller fish that will fit into their mouths.
I had one years ago its a gorgeous fish but I wont get another because it was very rarely out and I like to look at the fish I purchase.
some other info
The Marine Betta or Comet is difficult to keep mainly because it needs special attention in order to eat. Although there may be cases where this fish will eat prepared foods, we have not seen it. Normally they will only eat live fish about the size of a guppy or very small goldfish.
They do not tolerate fish of the same species at all and will fight to the death.
They also need plenty of time to stalk and capture their prey. If they are in a tank with other predaceous fish, like lions and groupers, they will most likely starve because they are not fast enough to get a good share of the food.
The Marine Betta is a beautifully colored fish with large fins, which are a continuation of their body color and give a rounded appearance. These fish are very dark with many white spots covering their body. They also have a "false eye" in the upper rearbody. Marine Bettas are not aggressive towards other fish of the same relative size. Great for fish-only or aggressive tanks. They should not be kept with shrimp that they will mistake for food. They are great for fish-only tanks.

Jess, are you talking about fw or sw?

Are sw beta males similar to fw as far as their tolerance of others?

FW males can be like Jeckel and Hyde. Some are nice, some are crazy. I used to place one male in each of my FW tanks that did not have fish that might eat their tails, just because I was not comfortable leaving them in smaller containers. I sold fw betas that had been in tanks with other fish for awhile. Customers would buy them then come in and tell me that they were attacking their fish. They were completely docile in my tanks. Other times I would get in males that were just downright nasty. They would flip out if you went near their glass tank that I kept them in (1ltr each). For FW betas you cannot keep males with one female. They have to have at least three females per one male. If they want to mate and the female is not ready, he will kill her. The females live happily together and mix wonderfully with any other small fish.

i have to start my tank over so i was thinking of getting a sw betta but im not sure it would be a good idea to pay that much for a fish i will never see. also im not sure what to feed them. a lfs here has a multi colored jelly fish for sale, wont they just die in a home tank? they told me they have to have a specis only tank and they eat plankton and they will be fine, im not sure it would be that easy or everyone would like one. lol

pretty much they will die unless a special tank is setup not a good endevore for a novice sw keeper. I have been taking care of tanks for a long time and wont attempt them for the specialty needs they require.

Hey that is so sad that you have to start all over. I would really recommend you slow down. Don't buy any high dollar fish until you can keep one or two cheap ones for a few months. The biggest mistake we have all made is trying to rush things. I know you really want to have a top notch set up to enjoy but it really takes about 1 year to get anywhere close to getting that and keeping it for any length of time.
