If the rock in the tank is very mature and you have a good sized refumium stocked with copepods, then it may be alright, but I wouldn't recommend it. They eat hundreds of pods per day. IMO he will eat them quicker than they can reproduce.

I think he will be quite happy having the tank all to himself! I have found that some mandarins are easier to feed than others. I have one that eats just about anything. Pods, frozen mysis, live worms, brine shrimp, just refuses flake. I feel very lucky as they can be hard to feed. Jan

I would not try this. The vast majority of mandarins will NOT eat any prepared foods. He will probably starve.

Your right the vast majority of madarins are very picky eaters! That's why I feel lucky with the one I have. However, I see no problem puting a mandarin alone in a 30 gallon tank. Hopefully it's loaded with pods. You might want to culture some amphipods and tigger pods- most mandarins like them. Jan

If you know that the vast majority do not eat prepared foods, how can you not see a problem putting one in a 30 gal tank??? Even the ones who eat prepared foods need pods in their diets. It can take up to a yr for one to die, but usually they end up dieing without a large tank with lots of pods and a fuge for the pods to breed. I am not being mean, just stating the facts.

This is a tough one. If you don't have a fuge you stand little, if any, chance of long term success. If no fuge currently, then put on one or two hang on the back fuges with chaeto and pods in each. Be prepared to buy pods often.
