Yes iam the one to flame on this topic buttt..... i have herd that more and more of them are accepting frozen and even formula 1 pellets? :notsure:
i dont really want to start a refuge but when i turn the lights off at night and shine a light in my tank i can always see some little critter scurry away into a hole or some other place in my tank
If i try to keep a mandarin what steps should i take to get there?

I'm sure you already know what kind of a response you will get... but here it goes anyway. A 10g can not support a Mandarin unless it is eating prepared foods.
IF the Mandarin will except frozen or pellet foods you would probably be able to keep one alive. IMO a 10g is to small even if you did manage to keep one alive.

for a mandarin you need a tank which is established for at least a year and probably 75-100 lbs of live rock. all mandarins do all day is search the rock for pods all day. maybe if you have a fuge attatched to the 10 gal thats about 75 gals you might be able to keep one.

I was lucky enough in Hawaii to get one that was on prepared foods and live brine. I housed it and 2 sea horses in a 25 Octogon which is very tall and skinny. Make an informed decision and be able to "LIVE" with that decision right or wrong. You will do what you think your limitations are. You are doing the correct thing though by getting all the info. and opinions that you can on here first which is VERY admirable. We have dicussed "flamable" issues before on here. You will do what you will do.

Well, IF (and that is a big if) you get very, very, very lucky and get one to eat prepared food, it most likely will not do as well as much prepared food does not have the proper nutrients it needs. However, there are those who have lotto-like luck and get one to survive for long periods of time.
There is the potential to get a HOB fuge and seed it regularly with pods (available from different online distributors). Don't know if it has been tried before, but in theory could work.
Kudos to you for thinking about this before getting one!

I have to go with jer on this one. I also have a 125 reef and still dont think I am able to keep a mandarin yet. I made the mistake when I was a newbie and got one for my 55. needless to say it died. Dont waste a fish, especially a cool fish like a mandarin. waste a damsel or something.

If your going to get a mandrin, then why did you even make this post, you know were going to say no. Why because 1. we care about the fish. 2. we know for a FACT its going to die. and 3. we dont want YOU to WASTE YOUR money.
I know your younger, and you will make mistakes...so please feel free to make them, just dont ask a question when you already know what the answer is going to be.

No need to yell... this is nothing "new", people have been trying to keep mandarins in undersized tanks for years... unfortunately is usually ends badly.

My opinion is NO. Even if you get a mandarin that accepts prepared food, I think it will become unhealthy due to the size of your small 10g tank and a lack of exercise. If you watch a mandarin in a larger tank, they can be seen constantly searching for pods to eat.
Even if you added copepods to your tank on an almost daily basis, I do not think the mandarin would get the exercise that its anatomy is built for.

I was simply stating from your replys it seems as though you were going to get one no matter what people said, hence why i made the remark...and i did say your younger, because you are...i've read in another thread and you said you were like 16 or something.
Please remember as upset as you may get there is no need to yell.
