I just noticed my Peacock Mantis Shrimp laid a bunch of bright red eggs. Im not really sure about their reproduction, they need both male and female to reproduce right?
Should i do anything about these eggs? Or should i just let my fish eat them?

Pictures!! Never seen that before haha. I think they do need a male and female to fertilize but I dont know if theyre hermaphrodites or not. Probably will become fish food, unless she defends the eggs.

Has she molted since you had her?
Yes, molted once in the 5 months that ive had her. I wanted to try and save the molt, but she buried it right after molting.

sorry the pics are blurry, my camera sucks
They were all orginaly attached to a large piece of krill that i fed her last night, but my puffer ate the krill and some of the eggs.

I think if they molt they are not fertile eggs. She can store sperm until her next molt. If there are no males around there are no sperm. Fish Food!

I actually haven't heard about anyone raising them successfully... not to say there aren't cases out there. I've never seen any of my mantis' with eggs.... I am so jealous.

She just laid another ball of eggs.
The only thing i dislike about having a mantis is there is such little information about them on the internet.

If we keep talking about them eventually there will be lots for peeps to read! :)
I keep several different kinds. But there is not substitute for a peacock for personality.

Yea, ive only kept the one peacock, but her personality is great. Very entertaining to watch.
I love how she will build her little home and set up rocks all around the entrance.

If you google "Dr. Roy Caldwell Mantis Shrimp" you will find a WHOLE lot. The guy does tons of research on them and is very willing to share most everything he knows. http://ib.berkeley.edu/labs/caldwell/
Ive actually read a lot of his stuff, as well as watched the videos, quite interesting. But still if you compare stomatopods to other animals, we really dont know that much about them.

Aren't outside links "illegal"?
To competitors, yes.
I find this really interesting. I wonder if it would be possible to keep 2 peacocks in the same tank, given who knows how much room. Then fry might be able to be reared.

From what ive read its pretty risky, when one molts, theres a good chance the other will kill it.Plus after they mate they need to be split up, or they will probably try and kill each other.

I'm thinking of getting a mantis shrimp... I haven't set up a tank yet but can you give me some info about what would work for one?
Here's a link to my thread asking the questions.
