mantis shrimp

I have read that mantis need at least a 30 gallon with a lot of sand and live rock so they can dig out a cave. If you put snails in there they will probably get eaten just like anything else that moves in there.
What kind of mantis do you have? How big is it?

There are many kinds of mantis shrimp. I have kept them in everyting from a 5 gallon to a 30 gallon. And all my tanks are glass.

The recommended minimum tank size for Odontodactylus scyllarus or the Peacock Mantis, is 26 gallons. Since they arent really swimmers, I believe the importance of the tank size is not so much the amount of gallons, but the footprint.
Although they do not commonly break glass, I wouldnt take the chance as larger specimens can and have. My Mantis is 4.5 inches long and randomly will walk up to the wall of his tank and give it a good whack. My tank is a custom made acrylic. Like everyone else mentioned, they need a species only tank. Mine coexists with a Green Chromis but anything else that goes in quickly becomes a meal.

Hey everybody,
I bought a bunch of live rock about six weeks ago. It is ultra premium stuf with lots of live critters and stuff on it. However, I was watching my tank today and found an undesirable. It is a mantis - about 2.5" long. Anyone have ideas or experience catching one? :help: :help: :help:
I ordered a crab trap the the other day. I should get it this week sometime.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

Mantis usually always hide inside one of your rocks. Find the rock that he is in and take it out and put it into a bucket. If he doesnt come out after a while dip the rock in freshwater. If still no success lure him out with food. He will eventually come out and once he does take the rock and put it back in the tank leaving the mantis in the bucket.

hoeflers if you catch the sucker and feel like shipping him, I'll take him. Just an offer...
I've heard a good way to catch him is to find the rock he lives in. Take it and dump it in a 40 salinity bucket of saltwater. He should come right out thinking that he needs to escape the high salinity.

Hey everybody,
I have found the rock he lives in - at least I think I have. I have gotten a realy good look at him too. He is about 3" long and brown. He also has a metalic greeen face, claws and tail. Kinda cool looking . He is getting a lot more brave too - he will come out and let me watch him now. I currently have a a crab trap with a piece of shrimp in it - he has shown no interest.
I will try removing the rock either today or tomorrow - wish me luck.
I'll post my results later.....

It depends on what Mantis you get as to whether or not you need an acrylic tank.
Some have "

[hr]
" and some have "clubs"....
