I am currently waging war with cyanobacteria that has carpeted my cc.
I am running a 180g with about 60lbs of live rock. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrates 5ppm or lower.
Here is what I've tried so far to get rid of the cyano:
1) Increased circulation, I have three 802 powerheads as well as water jetting from the sump return. The tank is really well circulated.
2) Reduced my feedings and physically removed any detritus.
3) Siphoned and netted out all the cyano.
4) Finally, I tried treating with maracyn. It got rid of the cyano only to have it return days later.
This weekend, I am planning on adding a 33 g refugium and getting a phosphate kit. I do use tap water that has been stored and aerated for about a week for my weekly water changes. I don't think phosphates are the problem since others in my area use the same method without cyano outbreaks.
What else can I do? Can't stand this stuff and am desperate to get rid of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
