I remember I was watching a show on tv about drugs and stuff, how they used morphine to try to "cure" an alcoholic, because they figured that a stoner would cause less damage than an alcoholic, and wouldn't go home and beat up his kids and wife

I know. It's just sort of funny. Going from something completely illegal to something for only 21+year olds. Technically, a 12 year old, and a 75 year old, should have the same amount of experience with something like that, which is zero...
Though it's the age I don't agree with. Like 21 for alcohol. It's a joke. Like any 19 or 20 year old on a college campus doesn't drink... It's just the movement to push all things to 21. Soon this 21's are just going to loose it, when everything gets pushed to that age. Kids really need to have things staggered, so they learn experiences at different points.

No, they're just clog our roadways and kill in a different way. Going 40mph on a highway because their so stoned and an 18-wheeler swerves to avoid them, crashes, and kills a family traveling in an SUV....

Precisely.
If you abuse MJ it will mess you up mentally and physically, just like booze, prescription drugs and Mickey D's.
Also agreed. In sufficient quantity, water and oxygen can be harmful, or even lethal, as well.
I'm in favor of legalization, but not for financial reasons. It is a big mistake to think that our state or federal revenue shortfalls could be reduced by taxing it. Given our drunken sailor legislators, throwing more money at them is no solution. We don't have a budget shortfall. We have a spending crisis. Taxing MJ cannot fix that.
By the same token however, the prison population could be substantially reduced and organized crime loses a significant edge through the legalization of a substance which is arguably less societally harmful and probably more medicinally valuable than alcohol. Not to mention the "War on Drugs" is demonstrably an abject failure and a complete waste of money. (And don't give me the argument that legalization will increase use. It's a specious argument. The statistics for alcoholism under prohibition vs. pre- and post-prohibition prove otherwise.)

I really don't have a problem with taxing it just like anything else. The minute it's legalized the price will crater. It isn't like it's rocket science to grow it. The art will be in controlling it. I would favor a nasty penalty for those caught "bootlegging" it. In fact now that I think of it the Cig makers could probably use MJ production as a way to shift their business away from tobacco. I've heard for years they already own the copyrights on obvious names for it. I wonder if the filters on cigs would take out some of the oils that aren't good for your lungs? I am sure they could come up with something.
I would say a stiff fine for selling only, not growing your own but I assume the politicians will be out for every tax dollar they can get.

I don't either. In fact I'm in favor of it. I just don't think that it's a solution to the budget crises we face.

There is no more involved in controlling MJ than there is in controlling alcohol. Maybe I live in the wrong part of the country, but I don't know anyone who buys, sells or manufactures bootleg booze.

It is arguable whether or not smoking it is actually harmful to the lungs. I have seen studies that say that it provides lung protection, i.e. MJ smokers are less prone to lung cancers, than tobacco smokers. Then again, to paraphrase Mark Twain: there are lies, there are damn lies, there are statistics, and then there are "scientific studies."

The Libertarian in me says the gov'mint has no business involving itself in my personal life, especially not on behalf of the businesses who fear loss of productivity. The Capitalist in me says legalize and tax the ever loving shite out of it. It will save money on the prison/DEA end of the equation and will also provide additional revenue to the state thereby lowering my personal taxes - haha. The Socialist in me says we have societal issues which cause people to want to escape reality in the first place and those issues need to be addressed.

I agree with this except for the legalization part

I think a better description of the "War on drugs" can be better described as a game of tiddly winks. We have made a very weak attempt to stop the inflow of drugs into our country. You can just look at illegal immigration as a indicator of that. The same only different.
So you legalize marijuana....do you really believe this will decrease illegal drug trafficking convictions and prison populations? I would argue that drug dealers and cartels will just turn to other drugs and continue to provide at a higher rate to offset loss in income. Or do you think just because marijuana is legalized they will turn over a new leaf ,go back to school and get respectable jobs?

How about shrooms?
Personally I don't have a problem with this. I see this a way for the government to reduce some of their deficit...
Theres actually a resurgance it medical studies involving shrooms and LSD, for the most part they are showing positive results.
I agree as long as you don't trip excessively especially with shrooms it can be quite a eye opening and life affirming experience

personally if its natural it should be legal, and i agree with you, but i highly doubt they will ever legalize coke or heroin. Id like to see shrooms legalized, but i doubt that will ever happen either...But i cant wait for the day marijuana is legalized nation wide...
+1... Theres honestly nothing wrong with it. Sure a lot of people see it as bad since it illlegal. But it safer than Alcohol and thats legal. People drink and drive and kill people. you never hear of someone being high off pot and killing someone while driving.

It happens. Being stoned and driving is dangerous because people are more inclined to think they aren't impaired than those who drink. It is also no "safe". Inhaling concentrated levels of smoke of any kind isn't a good thing but like with alcohol used in moderation would usually cause serious damage.
