Marineland LED lights

I need new lights for my 55 gallon reef tank and am considering getting the new marineland LED's. Are they worth the $400 or is there a better way to go? If someone has them now how do you like them?

they're pure crap for 400. you're better off with a fixture from evolution led, or maxspect.

The marineland reef capable lighting unit is an OK unit. It really comes down to the size of the tank and the depth. It does give comparable par readings to T5's.

according to par numbers, the reef capable light does NOT put out par readings even close to t5s. if you're talking 2 bulb fixtures, then maybe. 4 bulb fixtures with slr, these dont even come close

An 8 bulb t5 fixture gives a par reading of 140 and marineland's fixture 120 on the same tank. That is comparable.

if you're talking about the aquanerd blog, then its still not comparable. an 8bulb t5 fixture only putting out 140 PAR at 16" is nothing.
if you havent tested it yourself and tested the par numbers yourself, i wouldnt believe it. i've tested it out myself and got numbers closer to reefbuilders' reported numbers. at 24" i got 56 PAR, and at 12" 140 PAR. now compared to a TEK 6 bulb, only 6. i was getting 320 at 12" and 120 at 24". on my personal light fixture, ATI sunpower 6 bulb fixture, i get 350 PAR at 12" even with hanging my fixture at 14" above the surface of the water.

if i had to guess for myself, aquanerd measured intensities only DIRECTLY underneath the lights. for leds, horrible par numbers.

Well from tests that my friend has done (which gave similar results), the unit is comparable to t5's. There are a lot of variables that affect the par numbers. They are not better than t5's and I am not saying they are.

the only variables in my tests were the fixtures. of course, i run only quality bulbs too. all the numbers were taken in the same tank. with the price i'd be paying for the marineland fixture, id expect more out of them.

i'm not even paid to do these tests, i test alot of new products on the market for one of the other blogs and thats how i get to do these things. as a hobbyist, i would not recommend it at all for coral aquariums unless you really only want stuff like xenia and other softies. even a nova extreme pro would get better numbers than the marine land light. at least it will be a linear source of light as opposed to having spotty areas of light. as for coloration, its way too yellow for my taste. the colors didnt pop at all on any of the corals i had in my tank.

they are good for something like a seahorse tank with macro algae. i think theyd be perfect for a planted reef tank
