Marineland Tidepool sumps

I'm going to be purchasing two Marineland tidepools to use as sumps, one for each of my two tanks. I know I know, I could build a sump myself and save lots of money, but with my luck, I'd end up screwing it up and flooding my den - that's the kind of luck I generally have with DIY projects.
Anyways, is there any reason I couldn't use a nitrate sponge with one of the filter trays? At this point, I'm planning on using the top try to filter out larger debris in the water, the second tray with a nitrate sponge, and the third tray with carbon.
Opinions?
