i have a 4 plus inch maroon clown in my 90 gallon would a larger percula be ok i know people say not to do it but my older brother used to have a few perculas with his maroon and it wasnt bad at all . I will have another small tank running at that time if it dosnt work. Has anyone on here had luck with this combo thanks in advance. Matt

It almost sounds like you are going to do it regardless. Acclimate at night. Leave the lights off for a day and then watch to see what happens. They may ignore each other. They may battle to the death with the maroon winning. If you honestly have the other tank up and running then give it a shot. If not then wait till you do to try it. Maroon clown is a large aggressive fish. Yours is far from full grown.

i wouldnt say im going to do this regardless . I was going to buy a 3 inch percula and hope for for the best . But the other tank is only a 10 gallon and that percula would be huge in there. And i dont really like to stuff fish in tiny tanks. i have almost bought so many perculas like this but always decide not to. I did try this once with a very small percula my wife bought me and he flew across the tank and attacked him. i scared him away but the next morning the little fellow was dead. Now im just hoping that he wouldnt be as bad to a larger percula any thoughts?

It would be worse. The only times mixing species of clownfish has worked, has been by chance. Most likely the clownfish were added at the same time, and they happened to be one female, and one male. A 4"+ maroon is a female, and a 3"+ percula is also a female.

A large female maroon is very unlikley to tolerate any other clownfish in the same tank. Yeah, its been done; but I'll bet the maroon attacks within seconds of seeing the perc.

Yeah; they're much more territorial than most folks expect from a clownfish. A "timeout" often works with maroons. When you move a new fish from QT to the DT, give the maroon a week or so in the QT, then return him. IME, they do much better when they're the last fish in the tank than they are with newcomers.I consider them more "territorial" than "aggressive" and most fish learn to stay out of their territory. However; often they will claim the whole tank as "territory'; this is where the time-out helps.

yeah he thinks he owns the tank for sure
best way to stop this instant aggression when adding new tank member.. move a rock or 2. I know it sounds foolish but it really does change the territory just enough for the older fish don't realize it was his territory .and they make new.. once a fish has set up his territory the become very protective of it and may attack any new comer no matter what species it is.it really does work

Yeah, this works well, especially if a time-out isn't practical.

Also I don't think people realize the choppers big clowns get. My 5" tomato has a knarly little set of teeth and likes to use them on my other fish especially my tangs. Unfortunatly he always looks like cage fighter with cuts all over him from my tangs scalpels.

My maroon is almost 6 inches, she attacks and pushes around my clown trigger. I guess i shouldnt say attacks, cuz she doesnt ever bite him, she just puches him with her face. and he takes it? she is MEAN and changing the rock in my tank no longer works, she has to be taken out and put in the sump for a week or 2. Now she has an anemone and as long as the new guy doesnt get near it she hasnt fought with him (being a lunare wrasse and all) So this is the first time in 2 years she wasnt banished when i added a new guy.
