I recently put two maroon stripe clowns in my 45 gallon tank they are not getting along. They were fighting at first and then they split off and one is hiding. I am new to the saltwater world. Can you not have two of those type of clowns in a tank at the same time???

yes they will always have a little fight at the begining to figure the dominence of them and the more dominate will become the female of the pair.
its perfectly normal

Thanks, for the reply I was a little worried. Right now the one maroon clown is hiding while the other has tooken a likin to my bta. How long does it usually take before they get along?

don't know if you knew but clowns develop ---. The dominant one female the submissive male. depending on the size of your clowns relative to each other will determine their ---. If you have both about the same size the will figure it out. If not the larger one is probably the female.

They are about the same size. I guess when the pet store said they were peaceful I didn't think they would fight each other. Yes,I have heard about the dominance.

in general they are peacful but since there only 2 in the tank they go through a ritual of dominance to see who is going to get the privaledge of being a female.

I just added a True Perc in with my other much larger tank mate. They swam together for about 5 minutes. The larger established one flexed his muscles a bit the new smaller one did nothing, but, didnt submit either. BAD day for that little guy, he got tuned on for a while, I was forced to shut the lights off to help calm him down. It worked for a little while but soon the larger one went back to do more. The smaller one the entire time would not show the typical signs of submission, instead it went into hiding in my LR. I wanted to remove it but now I was stuck I couldnt get to it. So I let it be, in the next day and a half, it completly lost its tail fin, it looks like a little nub. But tonight for the first time in 4 days, it was out swimming with the other. And at the first sign of aggression the little one started the tell tale side rolling shaking motion that signify's submission and what do ya know the beatings have stopped.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. everything is the same, land sea or air. I do love the determination of s.e.x. in hermaphroditic fish.

That is how mine are acting, but actually the one is hosting my bta and the other is hiding in the live rock. I hope mine come around.

In the fish world, it is true. The female will be the dominate one.
You would think that the male species would learn LOL

Well like most of us we do have to be told like 100 times before we listen...
With dogs this is considered a sign of intellegence. In Human males its perceived by most women, as stupidity. In my next life I want to come back as a dog...
