Are you using tap water?

That would be my first thought. Bad water or bad filters on the RO unit. Combine bad water with overfeeding and not doing regular water changes and you have a problem.

The best little hair algae eater I ever had was a Lemonpeel dwarf angelfish. LOL...I didn't buy it for that but sure liked the stuff I had on my intake/output tubes. Any other eater will starve once the problem is fixed but at least with an angelfish you land up with a cool critter.

Getting a critter just to eat the hair algae is kind of not the right thing to do, since the problem goes unchecked, which will eventually turn into a bigger problem than hair algae. However if you start doing what you should, fixing the problem the right eater will get things back on track quicker. JMO

More and more people are considering the LemonPeel as one of the "safer" dwarfs. As with any dwarf, it's always a risk, but some are a much higher risk than others, if you keep them well fed, they're usually fine. I believe Flower's is reef safe but Gemmy had problems with hers.

Unfortunately most fish won't touch hair algae, especially if they know there is another source of food.

So very true, each fish has to be judged on individual behavior. So far it's 2 out of 3 folks on this site has a Lemonpeel that is safe. Gemmy got the one that reminds us..it isn't always so. However you won't know until you try, just have a backup plan just in case.

I have a lemon peel. I had issues in the beginning with it nipping at everything in the tank. It now only occasionally nips at my corals (has not killed anything), and if I am not careful it will steal food from my anemone. I try to keep it happy by having plenty of algae strips available. I do notice it peck my clam once in awhile.

Glad to hear that it's being more behaved.
