tryin to help my daughter with algebra

12x +6 -12x +9 -6x -10 = -4x +3 +3
5-6x = 6 -4x
-6x = 1 -4x
-2x = 1
x= - (1/2)

What grade is that?
Daniel, you'll be on speed dial.

LOL as long as its on 5-7th grade math, I'll answer the phone! Was helping a co-worker with college calc a few weeks ago, can't believe how much I forgot since hs.

9th and she is making me nuts! i forgot all that stuff, i have no clue!
between daniel an another person i have so far a
x=-(1/2) and
x = 1/2
close but i need a 3rd opinion and an explanation if someone can give one.

for those problems just remember the order of operations...
P.E.M.D.A.S (my math teacher is rolling over in her grave right now! )
parenthesis exponents multiply divide add subtract
Just do all in that order and you should get your answer

Your original expression can be reduced from:
12x+6 -3(4x-3) –(6x+10) = -(4x-3) +3
to
12x+6-12x+9-6x-10=-4x+3+3
then you get
-6x+5=-4x+6
then
5=2x+6
then
-1=2x
then
x=-1/2

Hey,
I've got a 22 year old and an 18 year old senior in high school. You know what they hate? Have them show you their math book, find the chapter they are working on and make them actually "read" the lessons. (You can help.) The exlpanation is more than likely right in front of them but it's easier to have you do the homework for them. Don't get caught in the trap of doing the work. Help them do it.
Been there, done that,
Dan'l

I hope this has been said by someone earlier. This is all you need to know to solve any algebra equation:
What you do to one side you do to the other.
that's basically it. so looking at the first step: multiply everything out so it is all just eingle thingies:
12x + 6 - 3 (4x - 3) - (6x + 10) = -(4x -3) + 3
becomes:
12x + 6 -3*4x -3*-3 -1*6x-1*10=-1*4x-1*-3 +3
or
12x +6 -12x +9 -6x -10 = -4x +3 +3
or
6 +9 -6x -10=-4x +6
-6x+5=-4x+6
(hope that's right)
now applying the above we need the x on the left so add 4x to both sides (the opposite of -4x)
-6x+5=-4x+6
+4x =+4x
-2x+5= 0x+6
now subtract 5 from each side (the opposite of +5)
-2x+5=6
-5=-5
-2x+0=1
now divide wach side by -2 (ooposite of multiplying by -2)
-2x=1
/ -2 =/-2
or
-2x/-2=1/-2
x = -1/2
checking
at least if it is wrong so are all the other answers.
the point is to get the unknown on one side and everything else on the other. you do that be doing the inverse operation (oposite) exactly the same one both sides of the equal side. If you divide on side you divide the other. if you multiply one side you multiply the other. if you add to one you add to the other. and so on and so on until you have just the unkown. then you have the answer.
HTH and not confuses LOL
