Maxi-Jet flow deflector

In the manual it says to point the flow deflector up (not straight up) to agitate the surface water. So, I did that now it is agitating the surface water. Why do I want to do this? Shouldn't I just point it straight ahead across the tank to circulate the water?

Surface agitation creates oxygen for the tank and prevents algae from forming on the top of the water.

Surface agitation allows gas and oxygen exchange to take place. You might want another PH blowing lengthwise across the tank for more water circulation.

Speaking of deflectors for the maxi-jet, does anyone know how to divide the current from a maxi jet into 2 different outputs? Thanks.

It helps gas exchange by removing organics and other particles from the surface of the water. The clean water surface would help diffusion, in which a substance moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In most cases that would mean CO2 moving from the water to the air, and O2 moving from the air into the water.
You can use a T or Y splitter on the maxijet, but it wouldn't be good for the aesthetics.
