hey guys,
Been reading about this maxi jet mod for the skimmer for a while now and finaly decided to try it out and so far it seems to be pretty sucessful.
Rather than use a dremel like i seen on other instructions i used a pair of wire snips, they were long enough to cust the impeller in one snip. I cut it horizontaly first and then verticaly and pulled off the cut pc by hand.
after i cut all the blades on the impeller, i push the top of the impeller through the enkamat to get an idea of how much i needed to cut off, i did this twice to get a double layer of the enkamat on the blades.
next i used the smallest zip ties i could find and i place 2 on the impeller opposite ends from each other to balance out the weight. once i had it trimed the way i wanted it i put it back in the power head and placed it into a bucket of water i had close by to see how it worked. at first it was a lot louder than normal, so i took it out and trimmed it some more and after a few test run it was finally back to normal. now i am just waiting to see how well my skimmer performs.....
Before i did the mod i never really got much foam from my skimmer, but in a week or so time frame i always had a brown syrup looking liquid in the collection cup......i am thinking it's because its a fowlr tank with three fish in it?? i am thinking about switching the impeller with the skimmer on my other tank since i always get foam from that skimmer....it has a lot more Lr and a few soft corals.......
p.s i also upgraded the venturi valve with one of those drip valves used for irrigation systems for Lowes since a lot of people say that helps as well.......here are a few pics
any questions or suggestion are welcome......
