Maxima clam Q

Just wondering, I would love a maxima clam for my 16 gal reef tank but why are they labled as difficult? I know they need strong light and I have an 80 watt pc fixture which gives me approx 5 watts per gallon but do they need a metal halite? What else is there to know about them? I know that some species grow to be huge, I've seen them the size of footballs but it will eventually be going in a 125 or bigger. Thanx

WPG is useless, pc's dont penetrate well, you would need t5's or MH...and don't buy anything with the thought you are going to upgrade...you may have all the intentions of doing it and it just doesn't happen...so be safe and wait.

as stated b4, pc light wont work with crocea or maxima clams. u can get away with deresa if kept near top. all clams r difficult, unless u can meet its requirements, such as proper calcium, alk. and strong light. if u r getting a clam in the future, get one bigger than 3 inches long. they hv much better survival rate.

like corals or plants, they need lights to photosynthesize. with out a decents light producing decent pars, they will starve to death.

OK, Maxima's are the least hardy clam of all the clam family that is available for the aquarium trade. It's recommended that they only be placed below MH lighting, and if you only use fluorescent lights the clam should be placed very near the surface of the water.
Clams do better in tanks that have high bio-loads with the brightest possible light you can give them.
The bright light is responsible for the beautiful colors that are caused by the natural food source that grows on the mantles called Zooxanthellae.
