Maxima Hi-s RO/DI users

I recently started using a new Kent Maxima Hi-s, RO/DI 35gpd unit. I am amazed how much waste water it makes. I hooked it up in my garage where I have a water supply but no drain. I am having to collect the waste water and it makes about 40 gal. waste to 5 gal. product.
Is this normal?

Somthing is wrong then. I am getting the same unit and I contacted Kent about this before and they said it should make 3 gallons waste to every one gallon clean water.

That can have something to do with water temp, and pressure. I was told the ratio will vary and may improve as the membrane gets saturated. I have a Kent TFC, not Hi-S though...........

I've never compared, but I get a whole lot more waste water than filtered. But, I live in a city where I have to use a Britta filter for the tap water or the dog pukes.

so whats the final verdict? Is it easier to get store bought bottled water? or RO/DI water form LFS or pay $100 water bill?

IMO - having an RO/DI unit is the only way to go. It allows you "some" control on the water quality - but as most of this hobby, comes with a cost.
I have the Kent Maxima Hi-S, RO/DI 60 gpd unit.
Initially it was indeed putting out quite a lot of waste water, but seemed to improve some over time. I don't measure the waste water coming out the orange tubing - it just goes to drain, but I did monitor the time required to fill a 5 gallon bucket - and the more I used it at the onset - it did seem to get better.
Looking at the instructions now ......
Troubleshooting -
Not enough product water, lots of waste:
Cause: Check the TDS, Temperature, PSI as stated in the overview section.
Looking for the darn overview section - hold on a sec ..... <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />
Okay - I found it - way too much to type but in a nutshell ....
Ideal water pressure = 65 psig
Ideal water temperature = 70 - 77 F
Never run HOT water or mixed hot and cold through the unit !! Only cold water ( my cold water is not 75 F I can assure you <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> )
TDS or total dissolved solids of the tap water, these units are rated for 200 ppm parts per million of TDS.
Higher TDS can also lower output ( increase waste IMO )
Good one Save a fish, eat chicken !
You was all over that one !!
My water bill for 2 grown adults that bathe regularly, do laundry, dishes, wash the car, and have 145 gallons of saltwater tanks - 55 gallon freshwater tank .... and a 1 year old beagle is nowhere close to $100 a month -
I better go check the sewer bill <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />
Better call 1-800-help-me-Kent

I had read that info as well. My PSI to the unit runs about 55-60 so thats not too bad. I cant imagine anywhere where your cold tap water would be 70-77 degres. My unit is in the garage and although a mild one this year so far, it is still January in Oklahoma. I am not too worried about the water bill, it takes alot of water usage to make much of a change. I just need to find an alternative to catching all the waste water.
Thanks for the input. :)
