I can't. I've tried. It doesn't work. I'm too scattered.
Yoga works for me though - meditation in motion.

how about trying to relax instead. You know, just sit outside by yourself and enjoy nature, think about how simple life is for animals and how our life is way to complex and full of unnecessary crap. The best ways to relax are fishing, hunting, and painting landscapes.(reef tank watching works too)

what's wrong with meditation? some people, sometimes, need a more structured method of relaxation than just "trying to relax." and just so you know - fishing, hunting and painting are all things that require intense concentration and a removal from one's normal strain of thought; ie, they are MEDITATIVE.

i never said anything was wrong with it, i was just giving some suggestions on what calms me. I was just suggesting these instead of sitting there saying ummmmmmmmmm
Thats another thing i don't understand, people crave "structure" isn't relaxing kinda supposed to be getting away from structure? I'm not trying to pick a fight or down anyone, i find this stuff interesting.
BTW, zeke, do you still have seahorses?

I meditate, not the sterotypical sitting with legs crossed and like chanting haha
I do sometimes just sit down and meditate when I do i usually just focus on my breathing and qi. Sometimes I just go for a walk, find a nice place, lie ddown and enjoy the clouds, or trees or what be it and listen. Meditation is what you want to make of it.
O and I never plan when I am going to meditate, I just do it when I see fit, or else it would be structuredd yes?

ugh. i suffer from procrastination-itis as well.

When I say structure I'm not talking about deadlines or due dates or consequences. I'm talking about having a prescribed method or algorithm or pattern. Often people will find themselves in such an incredibly stressful state that it becomes virtually impossible to "relax" without any sort of forced conscientious relaxation; ie meditation; ie fishing, painting, yoga, walking, shooting, excersising, chanting, etc.
Sometimes when you FORCE your brain to concentrate very hard on something you succeed in a general calming of your thoughts. For example, when I've had a stressful day and can't sit still or finish a thought and I get really worked up and upset, I take a yoga class. I have to concentrate so hard on my alignment, my breathing and my form that eventually I come to realize that I haven't been thinking at all about my terrible day for over an hour and now I am completely calm and rational again.
meditation is, indeed, what you make of it - but if you're looking for some good "tranquility meditation" techniques b/c u need a method for caming down your brain, check out the vids on YouTube - there's some great stuff on there. Search "meditation" or "how to meditate" or "tranquility meditation," etc.
