I live in Gaithersburg and have tried to scope out all the local ones in montgomery and fairax counties in NOVA. So far i deal with Tropical Fish World in g'burg. they've been very honest and helpful. In NOVA i go to the Marine Scene in Herndon. All Salt-water!! Amazing but expensive. Let me know of any good ones i am missing.

I'm in Chantilly. Marine Scene in Herndon does have a very good selection. They also have daily specials and their Fiji live rock is usually less than $4/lb. Some of their items are comparable to SWF.
As for other places, there is a place in Congressional Plaza in Rockville, but they are very expensive, but their selection is quite good.

Congressional Aquarium does have a nice selection. Not the healthiest fish though!! a lot have ick becuase of the small tanks they crowd everything into and prices are high for some things. There is also a new place on Rt. 355 just south of Shady Grove Rd called Marine Care Specialists. Awesome selection of corals!! I'm not quite ready for that yet but worth checking out.

I bought my entire set-up from Marine Scene. While it's true some things are more expensive there (I say some, but not all), it is reasonably close to other stores. Also, you're paying for the advice and quality there. I have had extremely good luck with even my first fish and corals in my new system. If you take their advice, you'll have a nice tank.

So far I've only had bad luck with their livestock. They recommended burgundy crabs and margarhita snails to clear up the diatom algae. Well the snails are almost all dead from being killed by the crabs and the crabs decided not to clear detritus but to clear all the nice purple coraline algae on my LR. so for cleanup crews they have evil animals, i hope their fish are better.

I grew up in Laurel MD but don't live there anymore. Anyway I LOVE to go to House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie. I go back to D.C. 3-4 times a year and always go to House of Tropicals. Check them out they are awesome!
