A number of animal activists have contacted state officials in an effort to head off a potential reclassification of feral cats, which could end the growing number of programs that trap, neuter and return them back into neighborhoods or the wild, and allow them to be hunted.
The state Fish and Game Council has condemned the idea of leaving cats in the wild and now another committee that reports to the state Department of Environmental Protection is studying the issue of TNR programs.
"Nothing has happened or been proposed so far,'' said Michelle Lerner, who works with the Animal Protection League of New Jersey and helped start a TNR program in Mount Olive last summer. "We are trying to work with state agencies to make sure this ridiculous proposal does not see the light of day.''
In a letter sent earlier this month to DEP officials, the APL and seven other groups, including the Humane Society of the United States and the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, protested any effort to reclassify cats.
Such a reclassification could bring an end to TNR programs like those in Morristown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Boonton and Randolph, and could allow hunters to shoot cats.
Some members of the state Fish and Game Council have brought up the issue of feral cats at several meetings, dating back to May 2007, when the council voted unanimously on a resolution stating that feral cats do not belong in the wild.
Council member Leonard Wolgast was the sponsor of the resolution and has brought the issue of feral cats up at several council meetings. Some animal activists have questioned whether he should be allowed to participate in such discussions at all because he is listed as owner of the East Brunswick property where Blumig Kennel, which they say is owned and operated by his wife's family, is located. That kennel contracts with several communities in Central Jersey to
pick up and euthanize cats.

I know thats how they handle them where my brother lives. Wild cats are just as damaging to the eco balance as any other invasive species.
A friend here who used to live in the boonies of western Nebraska says they had to do the same thing there. They would get over ran with cats idiots would take out to the country to set free.

Maybe we just need to get rid of the idiots who don;t understand the importance of spaying/neutering......
why torture the poor innocent animal who has only done what comes natural or needs to do to survive...
(not just cats) there are lots of wild dogs out there too.

.

So you have no problem then with mice/rats invading and moving into your garage either? After all, they are just doing what comes natural to survive.

Yep, coyote, fox, cat, they all get shot and killed as pests. A couple of my friends always told me, "If the cat is more than a 100 yards from the farm house, it's a pest, kill it."

Once they are in the wild for a significant period of time they could hardly be considered domesticated any more.

I hope you know I'm joking around about introducing a preditor... Kind of making fun of the evirnomentalist wackos, because they've done that in the past in national parks and it turned into mayhem...

YES, I realize that too, BUT....if "people" were more responsible, there would not be as many out there. There are soooo many free clinics ans such you can take an animal too for spaying....it is just pure laziness that people do not do it....then they toss the offspring out like they are trash...

Yes I agree, I just can't understand why some people hates cat. Just like you, I love cats too, reading this kind of article is really a heart breaking

People who hate cats will become rats on their next life!

#1.Of or relating to wild animals: savage, wild. See wild/tame.
#2. Showing or suggesting a disposition to be violently destructive without scruple or restraint:
They are just as wild as the rats or mice.
They were wild before domestication.
Again, I ask you, do you have qualms about exterminating mice or rats. See the difference is society as a whole has deemed certain animals cute and therefore receive more forgiveness and affection from us. Regardless, if their behavior is similar and dangerous to humans in some form, why should the NOT be treated as such. Again, it isn't the fault of mice or rats they are the way they are.

NO qualms about exterminating mice/rats...although I have one of those live traps

I have never seen a free clinic for mouse neutering though...have you?
AND ALSO....Just because I happen to love cats, I do not expect everyone else too....I also love brussel sprouts

And if people were more responsible there would not be an abortion debate. Yet there is. The problem still is, what to do with the current feral cat issue.

And I wish I had an answer. All I can do is keep my pets indoor and they are spayed. I also help to contribute to an animal rescue place so they can continue their free clinics...

How many people have pet mice compared to dogs and cats...
There is no place for nuetering Guinea pigs,or hedgehogs either.
so based on your argument we should kill them also if found.

Where did I say that? I said I PERSONALLY have a live trap...
Don't you keep guinea pigs in a cage? and most people who have pet rats (ICK) also keep them in cages.....so why would you have to neuter them

As stated before, I have NO solution to the Current problem....I just wish people would be more responsible...that's all.

One thing I like about the town I live in is the have the same laws for cats as they do dogs, Leashed and licensed. They also have a "litter fee" of 200.00. The license fee is 132.00 a year for intact animals but if they are fixed it is 12.00.
You don't see many stray animals around here. Holds down the back yard breeders too.
