I would probably NOT use that bulb.No telling what K it is,or how old...Does it even work???If so,get a new bulb,and try to retrofit the rest of it into your evsisting hood(if possible)...

luvluv,
HPS = High Pressure Sodium
Usually what you see on the side of buildings, street lights and security lights.
The garage thing and the weight made me think of them since the ballasts are usually attached.
They look kinda like halides, but the spectrum is really red. Not good for reefs, but they are good for growing ... well never mind...

By the way, the Metal Halide fixture you found can be used for an aquarium, but it would be best to take the ballast and capacitor out of the heavy fixture and make a remote ballast unit, then you can get a hood and reflector. If you know an electrician, talk to them about it. :rolleyes:

does anyone know of a way to get the K of this Bulb? and do you know how old it is? if you dont I would suggest getting a new bulb or it may not be the light output that you want.
Off topic but I was born and raised in South Bend and all my family still lives there.

I guess I didn't mention in my previous post, that I agree, you will need a different bulb.
Plus, depending on the wattage, it could still be too much for your tank. If the fixture is as big as you say it's probably a 400 watt, even possibly a 1000 watt light.

Premium Aquatics is East of 465 on Pendleton Pike on the East side of town. They have ads in some of the magazines. They have a lot of drygoods, live rock, and some livestock. I go down there occasionally and have been very pleased with them.
I like to be able to see what I'm getting so it's good to have them within an hours drive. Their prices are pretty good to. The have a website too.
I think its ***************.com. :D

1000 W metal halide
I think that is the manufactural plan, work shop light.
If you search for Marine-reef metal halide light bulbs, I don't think you can get 1000W
but if you search for Workshop Metal halide bulb you will get the result
