Metal halide question

I have noticed while shopping online for metal halides that there is quite a range of pricing on bulbs. What brands should be avoided and what brands are acceptable? I am looking for 3 250w or 3 400w set up for a new tank and considered buiding it myself as I built my 90 gal VHO hood. What features or coding numbers are relevant when comparing MH bulbs?
