Metal Halide Questions

I have a 55 gal. aquarium; 48" x 12" x 20.5".
I want to add a clam and need to upgrade to MH.
What would be a good choice?
Do I need 2 bulbs or will one centered over the tank be okay?
Also, can someone give some info on how to DIY?
If you need to email me a link my address is jmiller@shallowford.com
Thanks.

You may be able to get by with 2-150w DE MHs if the clam can be placed high in the tank but if it were me I'd go for a couple 250w MHs. Lighting wise, 2-250w MHs will allow you to keep about anything placed about anywhere.

Not to my knowledge.

i think 2 175's would work very well and allow you to keep just about anything...
i'm doing fine with a single 175 over a 60....
the only problem i have is the middle stabalizer bar on the tank... causes a shadow.

i just noticed your tank is 4 feet long, i'd say 2 for that... i have a breeder tank so it's only 3 feet long.

I have the 2 175 watt mh and 2 96 watt pcs on a 55 and I have 6 clams and they all look great. Just made the switch about a month ago and I can tell a huge difference in the colors of the clams. Go for it you wont regret it.

I bought the odyssey brand it costed 340.00 before shipping. I know that people dont like this brand but I have at this point no complaints. I had their pc's before I switched and the only thing I can complain about with them is the fans were loud. But I havent had any problems with the halides. I think a couple others on here have ordered these same fixtures.

shrimp daddy, you can find some set ups far cheaper too... look at the classified on here or possibly your local reefer website if you have one.
