Hi All,
I was walking around Home Depot yesterday and noticed in the lighting section that that carried metal halide out door lights, would these work on a tank if I could somehow rewire for a plug???
Any comments and ideas welcomed. thanks again.

couple problems first the reflectors for used for many residential/comercial MH fixtures isnt really good for aquriums, they are designed to provide a specific beam angle, not to aid in spectral intesity (increasing PAR, enengy of the light used for photosynthesis) , Second Metal Halide represents a large amount of different gas lamps, dpending on the gas and inert compounds in the bulb you may not get the right colortemp or PAR values from residential/comercial lamps.

You need to look at the wattage as well.
Most of those wall-pack type lights that HD sells are 70 watt lamps, SE lamps. I have never seen a single-ended 70w lamp for aquariums, only double-ended, which would basically mean that you'd have to tear the fixture apart and refit it with a new socket/reflector. Not worth it IMO.

There are a bunch of people that have modified them and used them on nano's.

Yes, people have used them for nano's. So, I guess I am wrong. lol. For larger tanks - it's not very effective.

Yes, definetly not powerful enough for a big tank. I have only seen people use them on nano's. I also think there are better options for the nano's.
