is two 250 w metal halide lights with 2 96 watt too much light for a fifty five gallon?

I don't think you have to much light... I would use the PC for supplemental lighting meaning 03 atinics. You will have plenty of light with the MH... Depending on what type of bulb you go with ( 10k or 14k) if using the 14k bulb you might not need to supplement with atinics

That would be fine. The heat will need addressed. Properly placed fans will do wonders.
