Metal Halides for 36 gallon

My lfs says metal halides are too hot for my tank.
They want me to stick with VHO 250-300.
They say it would cost 700 to do mh.
The thing is, there stuff doesn't look that great.
My tank is a 36 gallon behind the wall, so the lighting doesn't have to be pretty.
Any opinions?

I use a 175w MH on my 30 with no heat problems. Only cost like $100 with retrofits and making my own hood. Get good vent fans and heat is not a problem.
