metal oxidation

what could happen to your water in your tank with a piece of oxidating metal in it? Would it have a direct effect on any of your parameters?
Would it have disaster all written over it or???

What kind of 'metal'? I have a small 1/2" square foil piece from a brine shrimp food 'case' that I found in the tank last week. I guess that is what you get for having a friend watch you tank when you are gone. I can not get to it and wondered if it would cause any issues also.
