i believe they do, but im no expert.
but DE ones are just pretty much the middle part of a SE one, and the SE one has that glass around it so i would guess a DE one needs one. im not sure how accurate that is though, but its my hypothesis.
Besides, the UV shield isnt that expensive.

More concerned of how to incorporate them into my canopy. So far I'm just going to have the bulb holder and bulb, but when I add reflectors I need to know if I should look for reflectors w. the shield.
Has anyone tried pulls the shield and reflector out of a halogen work light and using it????

I can't remember the maker of them, but my LFS has DE reflectors with holders and glass for like $35+or-. Just add ballast.

Not 100% sure, but I think the Halogen shield will not block out the massive UV out of the DE.

you do need to make sure its the proper UV sheilded glass, SE halides have uv treated glass on the outside of the bulb DE or HQI bulbs dont so you need a UV sheild to prevent genetic damage through massive UV bombardment to your fish and corals. halogen glass is not UV sheilded.
