my 175w is about 4" from the water surface and I have no heat problems but I use a fan in my sump which provides quite a bit of cooling. I would say 6" - 8" is optimum but it all depends on if you use fans blowing directly accross your tank surface or not, if so the bulb can be lower. Or in my case without the sump and the fan blowing on the sump I'm sure I would have a heat problem with the MH 4" off the surface.
i'm sure that i'm just misunderstanding you, but how would the fan blowing on your sump alleviate the heat produced from your lights on your fish tank? my chiller runs in my sump, so something like that?
my mh are 6" above.
btw....blowing air across the body of water will cool that water. but depending on the size of his sump, and the amount of air, it might not be enuf........
