i have a 150watt MH in a pendant that i mounted in my canopy...the problem is the thing gets freakin hot and might cause a fire.
here are a few pics of the pendant, canopy, and i drew a diagram of how it is mounted.
(in the pic i drew...the grey squares are screws that keep the top of the pendant 1/2" away from the top of the canopy. the thing is is that the screws now transfer heat that goes through them and unto my canopy top...they are 200 degrees probably. im going to get a fan to blow across the canopy's inside to blow out the built up heat out through a vent on the other end. but i dont think the screws and the pendents 1/2" distance from the canopy top is safe enough to not keep me worried)
what do you think? will i be safe?

All MH lights get really hot…it will burn you to touch even the housing…this is why everyone is so worried about super heating the tank. Just make sure your lights are not touching anything flammable, a fan blowing on it will help allot.
The setup you have looks fine to me.

First of all.. I know plenty of folks do it and thats fine, but you are not supposed to hang pendants in an enclosed place because there is no where for the heat to escape..
Throw a fan in there and have them blow on the pend. if your that worried or get them out of the canopy..

thanks for your guy's help. im definitely getting a fan that will blow across the canopy...that will also blow air through the inside of the pendent. added on to that i will have two air vents on the top of the canopy and one vent on the opposite side of the fan. hopefully that will help.

maybe u can cut holes in the canopy and rig a computer fan on each side..one to blow in air the other to suck out the hot air...

IMO the best way to cool down that area is to pull the hot air out. Blowing air at the pendant isn't going to do as much as pulling the hot air out would. Again, just my opinion

i agree...would aquaguy's idea be good? like he said...if one was to blow the air across the canopy and the other one on the opposing side were to suck it out. it would make sense and serves two purposes, 1) being that it is cooling off the inside and 2) the hot air is being sucked out of the canopy. i think it seems like a great idea.

One pushing air in and one pulling it out is counter productive..
They both need to be going the same way... hopefully out..
2 fans both blowing the hot air out of the canopy is going to be more beneficial..

oh, i just realized how that would be counter productive...took me a few seconds. yeah both need to be doing the same thing. would they be more productive if they both blew colder air in or sucked the hotter air out? im just thinking that they wont have to power to suck out the hot air in the middle of the canopy.

I'd say hot air out. Also if you can install 2 fans directly above the pendant sucking air out, it would be even better.

yeah that would make more sense...i will probably put one large fan on top of the canopy right above the pendant to suck any hot air out and then put two fans on each side to suck the hot air out from the rest of the canopy.
