You read it! Maybe some of u old timers can tune in (no offense)...u where their after all! It just seems that these things are being more and more shunned (if u will) from the hobby...i can understand after all with LEDs, plasma (right around the corner), and skimmers and fuges!

Old timers at my work were telling me when i first started to get a under gravel filter cuz it suked the whole water volume down evenly or something like that...i just cant imagine having to do maintenance on this and such...and Mh ive experienced i could prob tan underneath them LOL actually just burn now that i think about it!

Well you young whipper snapper, there are many varied ways to run a successful reef aquarium. However I would point to the fact that many large public aquariums continue to use plenums to filter there tanks. Maybe some more research for you eh?

Most of the accepted methods of filtering have been around since the 80's and 90's. They way the equipment works has changed but very little in the method.
As for lighting progress there seems to be in the applications developed for other things finding there way into the hobby.

While they have found a way to make more light to match MHs, they have yet to develope the sunshine shimmer the MHs create. For me something about the light dancing in the water is an important part of whole beautiful concept of keeping SW tanks.
I have never used an UG filter except in a 2g freshwater beta tank
I would like to see power heads go the way of the dodo. I have been putzing with the system Corey made up for me on my SH tank. I lengthened the spray bars and made fewer holes to really push the water out...all the corals dance now and I was able to remove the PH I had added.
I'm so proud of my silly bad self..LOL...I successfully used a power drill to make holes in the PVC pipe, after realizing I could actually use it, then I ventured to outside and used the drill as a screw driver and fixed my wooden gate by putting in a new latch.
Now if I can figure out a way to rig the 90g I may be able to get rid of those ugly black orbs in my tank altogether.

I am not sure where you get this idea from but my leds has as good if not better shimmer than the metal halide I had previously. Plus I can adjust the amount and intensity of the shimmer by varying color of the leds.

I have never had the LEDs and keep forgetting they have them for more than moonlights now, on my SH tank I got the T5s because of the heat. If they have found a way to replace the shimmer, then MHs may indeed be on the way out. I don't think LEDs get hot like MH lighting.... or when you get enough of them ...do they?

The benefits of LED over MH.
No bulb replacement costs.
Infinitely variable color and intensity.
Less electricity costs
Less heat
You do get shimmer.
Higher PAR values that Metal Halide

basically LEDs are the BOMB flower....i would deff at least try it out... In my once upon a time house i wanna do track lighting with par38 LED bulbs in them.
