Hi people,
Looking for advise concerning lights.
When to a shop today and seen metal halide 70W, 150W and 400W. Which one to buy? My tank is a 70 gallons (90cm long, 60cm width and 50cm height). Will a 70W MH enough for my tank?
Waiting fo your reply before shopping :)
Thanks,

Uh, well 70 watts wont be NEARLY enough, as far as which others and how many, it depends on what u want to keep. Give me that info, and I can help u out further.

The 150w MHs would be ok but you would still be limited... if you want no limitations, go for 250w MHs. Don't bother with the 70w... unless it's for your refuge.

Thanks for your replies.
I am actually cycling my tank. My goal is to make it a reef tank. I don't know what are the names of the corals because I can get them directly from the ocean. I will keep both soft and hard coral if I get them. I have read that soft coral need less light than hard coral, so will a 150W be ok for keeping soft coral???
By the way, how much more are you guys paying the electricity bill every months?? Sorry for being curious but I want to know so that I can tell my parents before they get shock when they get the electricity bill (Especially when using MH).
Thanks

okay why not look for two metal halides of 150 / 175 watts with some power compact actinics. Combination lights in 36" for your tank from a few brands. For any kind of reef project, quit thinking what can I get by with and start think 5 watts per gallon minimum. Also remember a single metal halide won't light your whole tank, I made that mistake at first too. So bite the bullet and get enough light up front. 70 gallon reef set up, with all the equipment may make a 5 - 10 dollar a month diff in the electric bill.
Just have fun with this hobby and be kind to your critters.

tell me you are not from the US. As far as I know we can only have aquacultured corals. No more harvasting. Be careful on the political correctness of what you type!

Hi thanks for replying.
Only 5-10 dollar in my electricity bill if I put 2 MH 150 watts? Are you sure? One 150watts won't be enough for my 90cm X 60cm tank?
Yes I am not from the U.S. I am on an island name Mauritius, situated in the indian ocean. Believe me or not, I live next to the sea and I can see and get corals and fish (lion fish comes at night, boxfish, etc) and that is why I am setting up a tank. I know it is illegal to collect these things from the sea here but no one will know

Confirm me for the electricity bill. Because if the amount is right, I will put 2 150watts but if it is more then I will see if I put only one. Thanks
My parents will chase me if the electricity bill is too high :joy:
Waiting to here from you.
