Here is what I have, very similar to MN's. 2x250w XM 10k's with PFO ballasts, supplemented with 4x65w Current PC's (actinic). Retrofitted to my custom 120 canopy. Love it!!

I originally bought a Custom Sea Life 2x65 watt PC setup for $200. Then I bought seperate 150 watt halide parts and just retrofitted it into the CSL hood as DIY project. Total cost: $350.
1x150 watt DE MH + 2x65 watt PC + 2x Moonlights

JacknJill, being as they are the first bulbs I have tried I like them and have no complaints with them. The light is very white, but I figured that I would use the 10k's first for better coral growth (at least that is what I have heard), and when I need to change I am going to try the XM 15k's to try to split the blue of the 20k's and the white of the 10k's. If someone has better bulbs or can pose an arguement for better bulbs I would listen. My LFS guy doesn't like XM's but doesn't give me a good rational for why not. He likes Ushio better. NM could probably tell us more about the bulbs and what his take is on them.

Lots of viable optopns are out there. First step is to decide which option best suits your needs and the creatures you wish to keep...then research viable options for your situation from there.

Here is a crappy picture of my canopy. Again dont mind the crappy canopy, its the lights were looking at right? Anyway its only temp...for about a year now. I have 2 - 250w 20,000k radium MH bulbs with ARO electronic ballasts & 4 48" VHO 110w URI superactinics all mounted on a 48" reflector. I got all the stuff from Hellolights.com for around 7 or 800 bucks. Oh BTW the VHO's are run off an icecap 660 I got off "the worlds biggest aution site" used for 100 bucks. HTH.

Here's mine:

Giesemann 250w DE 20000k lamp
I am loving this one. Cost me about 5 bills.

Well, it's lower now, that was when I first started acclimating the corals to it. Plus I shot up at it on purpose in that picture.

The Pendant
This is standing right next to the tank. And it isn't as blinding at the picture makes it look.
The first picture was at 15" above the water. This one is 12". I plan to lower it another 4" or so over time.

It's in the subtitle for the first picture. Giesemann. Made in Germany. Yeah $518 I think with the bulb which is 20000k and also made by Giesemann.
