MHalides and TV interference...

I've got a friend who is getting interference on his TV when his MH's come on. There is no interference on the TV when there is a DVD playing but when the TV is showing regular cable television, there is static and snow on the TV screen. When the halides go off, the interference is gone. His tank is about 15 feet away from the TV. I believe he has two 200W 20K's. Has anyone else experienced any kind of interference on the TV with their halides???
Thanks,
Chris

I dont' think it is directly interfering with the signal. Rather, they may be on the same electrical circuit and that is somehow causing interference.
To rule this in or out, try running a heavy-duty extension cord (like an outdoor type one...to avoid overload) to a plug in a different room that you know is on a seperate circuit. If the interference goes away, culprit is found. He may have to move either the MH or TV to a different circuit. If it is still there, then I am not sure where the problem lies.

Actually I think it is the ballast itself. I remember reading a few posts on here a while back about this problem. I know IceCap MH ballasts used to be notorious for this problem, but they have since worked out the kinks. I believe you can go to Radio Shack and buy a device that puts them on different frequencies.

i have seen this also. things like a microwave does this to alot of tv's as well.
but i would try what grog said first since it would be the easy fix. but it is possible that its the ballast itself. especially if its a tube tv

Its in the circuitry(is that a word?) remember a long time ago when you ran the vacuum cleaner and youd get static on your TV? is your TV relatively old? or is your house older? its just pulling too many watts through your circuit system, the heavy duty cord should resolve this problem, or use a power strip, same thing, it will balance out the power....

I would try Grogs recommendation as it's the easiest to prove out, if the interference is being induced back on the AC outlet/circuit. How is the cable attached to the TV directly or the a cable company box then TV? The ballast may be causing the interference. Either through proximity to the cable run (bad shielding in the coax) or TV tuner/cable box which ever you have or both. Check the connections for the cable coax throughout the path. up to the TV. make sure the shield is intact and connectors are screwed all the way in. Appliances like TVs have shielding built in to prevent most type of electical interferance.
