i know ther is no suck thing as a dwarf tang but is there any tang that is smaller than the rest that could reside in my 45 galloN??? i know in about 3 years id have to move it but i plan in about 3 years to upgrade from a mere 45 to a 175. i figure its better to make one big upgrade than to make 3 or 4 smaller ones! saves LOTS of money!!!!!!!!1 so anyways.... are there any tangs that are smaller that you know of!
thanks
flame
ps - has anyone ever had success with a tang in a 45 gallon? :D

why not get something like a dwarf angel? they stay small but can get to about 3' if not a little bigger and there are a ton of different ones you can choose from
potters, flame, multicolor, coral beauty, nox, keyhole, swallowtail, flameback, bicolor, rusty, half black, lemonpeel
and im sure im missing a few of them
good luck

as long as you don't pack your tank full of other fish a small yellow or brown tang would be fine ( in my humble opinion ). He will grow but you plan to upgrade anyways. He won't get so big so that he can't turn around. just buy the tang small and feed him algae to help his diet.

There isn't a tang that you could put in a 45 gallon tank, unless you want it to be stressed, and then give all the fish in your tank ich. So,in my oppinion start looking for something else.

i thought chevron tangs stayed very small. I have never seen one larger than like 1.5 inches. ofcourse they are bloody expensive.

flameangel. dasnake is wrong. The biggest factor is swimming room. If the tang (a very small tang ) was pushed abainst against the glass with 500 lbs of rock then a small tang would be fine, and even if you don't upgrade you can always trade you tang in once it gets to big for your tank and get a smaller tang. The tang is not going to think one day ( this tank is sure small , wish I was in that big tank 3 blocks away). If you don't mind taking a loss of money when you trade the fish in every year or so then get the tang.

I guess I should froofread my work. What I meant was that if your tank was packed to the front with rock then a tang would be out of the question. Much of any fish would be out of the question. But if there was plenty of swimming room then a small tang would be okay until you upgraded or traded him in

Chevron tangs don't stay small, you only see juviniles in the stores. When they get to be adults they turn into a non attractive brown fish, kind of like a Kole tang but without the yellow around the eyes. Also,I am wrong about keeping a tang in a 45 gallon tank? I want you to try to find a book that says you can keep a tang in a 45 gallon tank.It is a small tank, that doesn't have the length that a tang needs. If you want a tang that in a few months will get ich from being stressed out, because there isn't room for it to swim,Nock Your Self Out!

im voting with dasnake on this one. i dont think there is enough swimming room in a 45. i dont think you should put a tang in anything less than a 75. maybe a 55, but i wouldnt try it. that tang would stress, and tangs get ick easily anyways.

thanks for the info on the chevron.
not to be mean but a 45 is small. is it a 45 long?? cause then it would be 4 feet.
personnally, if it is an open tank. if it is a 4 foot tank. then a tang (in my personal opionion) would be ok. Not a large tang, but one like 2" would be ok. When it grows just trade it in

I had a yellow and a hippo tang in my 46 bowed tank. They were both purchased very small but have since died from Ick. First the yellow had a very slight case of it...then the hippo came last week and got ick really bad. Needless to say, they are now both dead, along with my pygmy angel and maroon clown that came with the hippo. I didn't have enough time to trade them back. It didn't seem to small for them because they were tiny themselves, but i'm gonna think twice about tangs now, because of ick and killing others in my tank. Hope this helps a little.

Sorry for the losses, EBECKELS. I'm fortunate that my experiences with tangs have been better.Tangs are great fish if cared for properly. The tank cannot be overstocked and yes you _MUST quarentine before adding to tank. If Ick is discovered it is readily cured with Copper and it usually does not come back if water quality is maintained. I must say that they are prone to ICK so this regimen must be followed. My hippo did get ICk when I first got him. I treated him while under quarentine and now I have had him 2 1/2 years with no problems. As stated in earlier posts , I have many tangs w/ good success. They are by far my favorites.
If you are prepared to provide them w/ the right conditions and water quality, they are worth owning.

i've seen it done before, just pick a healthy juvenile and feed it a varied diet and it'll do well, till it gets to big, then trade him in for something else, hippo tangs do well by the way
