Miniatus and v-tail groupers

I have a miniatus about 4 inches just got it yesterday. Today somebody wants to give me a 6 inch vtail grouper. I know they say you can't put two of the same color groupers together.Being that the miniatus was in the tank first woud it still be a problem even though its only been a day. Woud the vtail kill the miniatus. I have a 150 gallon no other fish in tank. Thanks

they are also the same species Cephalopholis so there would likely be some major issues between the 2. unless the vtail has started to really thicken up and put on some good bulk the miniatus would prob drive the newcomer to get some infection, ich, disease etc

Remember these guys aren't going to this small very long. Groupers grow very fast and get very big. A Miniatus can easily reach 12-15" in captivity. They'll also eat about anything they can get there huge mouths around. If you have the room, they are very personable, pretty, and hardy fish.

I know, I really love the colors. I currently only have a vtail and miniatus grouper in tank and I only want a saddle back grouper and a marble shark. Thats it, 3 groupers and a shark.

Man the miniatus stays hiding behind the rocks. He peeks his head every now and then but I have yet to see him swim around the tank. The v tail grouper swims around the tank all day, he even comes to the glass to look at me, but my daughter chases him. I think I have too many rocks. I might need to sell some, lol.

There is no way you can keep 3 groupers and a shark in a 150, the saddleback will get huge. they will end up killing each other, most likely the saddleback will eventually be in there by himself

I agree; not even a close call, I'm afraid.

I used to have a 135 gallon tank and I have had a panther, miniatus, argus, damperia, vtail, blue and gold, marble shark, and a saddleback not all at the same time. I know the saddle eats alot like the blue and gold and the two of them grow faster. When the miniatus or the vtail would eat two shrimp or silversides and be full, the bue and gold and the saddleback would eat 6. The saddleback and the shark got along great except a few scuffle at feeding time.
My friend have a miniatus in his tank for like a week and then he put a panther, damperia, and a blue and god grouper in on Sunday. The miniatus kept trying to fight the blue and gold.He doesnt have any rock works because he says he have had the rocks fall on precious fish and kill them.. And get this, he have a 55 gallon tank. I tried to tell him. I tried to give him my old 135 a while back but he says he doesnt have the space, so I guess he has a back up plan.

He hasn't got rocks because they fall on the fish? Thanks for making this another entertaining day on the forums! (without the security of hiding places, most of his fish will soon croak due to stress, anyhow. I'd give your tank to someone who will enjoy the hobby; your friends days as a SW fishkeeper sound very limited.)

Lol. He's still learning. The lfs where he shops the guy does'nt warn you , he just try to sell fish thats it. When I first started, I had a 55 gallon and it was not even a month and he knew this and he sold me a sebae clown, a panther grouper and huma trigger. He also sold me a shark egg. I keep telling him to call me and let me know what he's buying before hand, but he wont listen. H e have had different types of fish like an angel that ended up having ich and killing the rest of the tank. I told him I would search the internet for a good price on a skimmer and he went to a lfs and bought one for almost two hundred and its only for up to 65 gallons. He will learn or else he will be giving it away soon.

Mini's are MEAN fish
undeniably beautiful fish
but they get a mind set of i own anytank im in esepcially when they get big
the miniatus by itself will become an absolute terror in that tank

Miniatus are mean but not as mean as saddleback.
I fed them squid and shrimp today. The vtail ate more than the miniatus. The miniatus stay hiding. He darted out twice for food and went back behind rock. Last night about 12 midnight I went in my family room and turned on the tank lights and actually saw him in the middle of the tank towards the back. I have some large shrimps in the tank and none of the groupers messes with them, even though they stay buried in the sand al day until after hours.

The miniatus is scared of the vtail. He stays behind the same rock, I have to put the food close to his hiding spot for him to eat.The vtail swis around the tank and even soeties passes by the miniatus spot like he wants to fight but just swims away. Only when its really late and the lights been out for a while he comes from behind the rock. You think I should move the rock he's hiding behind so the vtail can get used to seeing him?

You should probably change your tank to freshwater until you take some responsibility with this hobby.

Thank you for the concern. I said I have had those type of groupers NOT AT THE SAME TIME. Right now I have two groupers in my tank.I only have two fish. Yeah back then I had four at one time and thats when I started out and my lfs sold me anything and gave all the wrong advise, but who have not made a mistake when they started? Thats why Iam on here with questions. I see crazy stock lists everyday and I don't see anybody telling them to go to freshwater. What happened freshwater fish is not important?
