I've never tried it myself...but I have heard positive feed back about it. Some negative stuff too...but like I said I have absolutely no experience with the stuff. I do know some members here have used it...maybe a bump up top will get ya a few responses...good luck.

Alsie, I use an ecosystem setup and I love it, very low maintance. Though I did run into a few problems in the first year (I think due to inexperience) but I'm in year three now and its doing great! I think that the most imortant thing to remember about having an ecosystem is to try not to put any additives in the tank if you can help it b/c since you don't have to do a water change but about every 3-4 months or longer, there is no way for them to be filtered out. Also be carefull on chosing your inhabitants, everyone should have a job in the tank if its going to be self reliant.

Esotic 1 - I have read the manufacurers write up and I have a 5" sand base in my tank and they reccomend no more than a inch. Don't know if I'm reading it wrong. I don't want to start a disaster in my sump that ends up going to my main tank. Can you explain yours in more detail?

In my opinon 5" of sand is too much for and ecotank. I use only about 1" of LS in mine. The reason for this is that since you are not going to be doing alot of water changes, the sand is going to get dirty, and it's alot easier for your clean up crew to keep 1" of sand clean vs: 5" inches. As far as the sump, I have only about 1" of mirical mud and some culpra (or whatever) alge in there w/ 24hr lights on it. The alge will grow and die back as needed on its own. Take a look @ www.ecosystemaquarium.com, it's got some usefull info on there as well.

Tanks Esotic 1= looks like my trying it is out unless I want to break everything down and get rid of 4" of LS. Will have to file it till a later time if I ever get another tank or break down the tank. Sounds like a good system for those wishing to use it.

i have been using mine for almost 8 months. 3 water changes to date. works great, very low maintanence. Low sand bed level for sure. the real reason is because DSB compete for nutrients that the macro thrive on. The only processing of waste comes from LR and macro. The mud is fortified with two years worth of nutrients.. After which you have to do a 50% change on the mud. Pretty simple to comply with. Worth every penny.
