missing peppermint shrimp?

I haven't seen my peppermint shrimp for about a week or so. And, yes, I have looked with a flashlight at night. Granted, he likes to hide, but at what point do I start digging around in my tank to verify that he's alive? What do you do for your little fellas that are MIA?

I have had a few fish go MIA and never recovered a body. I think my other occupants most likely eat them, and I've never gotten much of a chemical spike from them disappearing. I worry that if I dug around in my sand bed I might do more harm than good (I've got probably around 7 inches of sand for my engineer goby). I KNOW I watched my pistol shrimp drag down my scooter blenny into his hole and eat him.
How big is your tank? A decaying shrimp in a 12 gallon will have different consequences than the same in a 150 gallon tank.

I've got a 55 g. I think I'm also experiencing a bit of a breakout of what I think is cyanobacteria (velvet-y soft maroon stuff). If the little fella didn't survive, it wouldn't surprise me that this could be an effect of his decay in some hidden crevice.

Normal behavior, the only time I see mine is after lights out.
