Monitor / Controller

Is there a real demand for an inexpensive monitor / controller (octopus) for an aquarium in this hobby?
I was trying to find a monitor that works like the octopus 4000 that is not 700.00. I was wondering if anyone else has had any luck in finding one. Does anyone else think it would be a good addition to get one.
